Mary Kom was defeated by Ingrit Valencia of Colombia to exit the Tokyo Olympics in the 16th round on Thursday. The Indian boxer lost 3-2 in a split decision to face the 2016 Rio bronze medal in the women’s flyweight division (51kg).

Mary Kom, a London Olympic bronze medalist, was aggressive in her early days but the Colombian, who has been clever from two defeats to an Indian boxer in recent times, has been wary of her and has been at work by punching quickly. There was little that did not separate the two in terms of style of play but Valencia, who won a bronze medal in Rio 2016, managed to attract the attention of the judges with his stops. Four judges gave Colombia the chance to get the highest score in Round 1.
