ODI ranking: Australia has maintained its top position in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Rankings following the yearly update, but Pakistan and India will be tough opponents moving forward.

Following the yearly update, Australia’s rating increased from 113 to 118, retaining a slim lead over Pakistan (116 points) and India (115 points).

Prior to the yearly update of the rankings, Australia was at the top with 113 points, followed by India in decimal order. After winning the fourth ODI against New Zealand this month, Pakistan, which was placed third with 112 points, momentarily topped the rankings.

Pakistan could have remained on top of the rankings even after the annual update, if they had managed a 5-0 clean sweep against New Zealand.

The annual ranking considers all series completed from May 2020 onward, with 50 percent weighting for series completed before May 2022 and 100 percent weighting for all subsequent series.

This means that Pakistan have now overtaken India in second place, their 4–0 series defeat in England no longer counting. Their 3-0 defeat in England in 2021 has also reduced their weight, helping them leapfrog India in the charts. India, on the other hand, have been heavily affected by the 2-1 series loss at home against Australia this year.

With several ODIs lined up in the near future, there remains room for major movement in the top three as the teams intensify their preparations ahead of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The top three have made huge gains, with New Zealand (104 points) placed fourth. To move up to fourth place, the Black Caps have passed England (101 points). England have seen their ratings drop by a massive 10 points, with the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup win no longer being considered.

South Africa (ranked sixth) and Bangladesh (ranked seventh) have retained their positions following the annual update. But there is great movement beneath them as Afghanistan makes a huge jump to overtake Sri Lanka and the West Indies to climb to eighth position.

Afghanistan improved its rating score (71 to 88), while Sri Lanka (86 to 80) saw a decline. The West Indies retained their rating of 72.
