Lionel Messi was set to sign his new contract with the club until 2026 on the eve of the 5th of August.
The verbal agreement of the contract was reached in weeks and due to that Messi and his father Jorge were in Barcelona itself.
Thursday evening, a press conference and official statement of the club on the resigning of Messi was planned.
The party was spoiled after, Barcelona checked La Liga’s financial rules for signing and registering a player.
Joan Laporta cleared the air with Leo, in a professional meeting, and appreciating his honesty Leo agreed to whatever the club’s decisions were.
As per rumors PSG and Bayern Munich have made direct contact with Messi to sign him!!

Leo Messi wanted to STAY in Barcelona, he had an agreement to stay at Barça and we wanted Leo to stay. I want to thank Leo’s camp and all people involved in the negotiations. Unfortunately, because of La Liga rules, we can’t proceed.
“Negotiations with Leo Messi have ENDED. We can’t register Messi because of La Liga rules, they’re not flexible with us on salary limit. We had an agreement with Leo but we can’t register him. Leo will now look at OTHER OPTIONS, we had this totally clear deadline”.
“Financial numbers and losses are worse than expected. Our salary mass is not leaving any margin. Financial Fair Play is also blocking us. I can’t make a decision that could destroy the club, Barça is the most important thing”.
