A Legendary Footballer Sunil Chhetri Announces Retirement from International Football After the FIFA World Cup 2024 Qualifier against Kuwait: The Indian Football Team Captain and Legendary Player Sunil Chhetri Announces his retirement from International Football. The 39-year-old will be playing his last game for Indian National Football in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers against Kuwait on June 06, 2024, at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. It was a sudden surprise by Sunil Chhetri and everyone giving well wishes to him including Virat Kohli, BCCI, Yuzvendra Chahal and many others.

Sunil Chhetri made his announcement about his retirement through the video published on his social media handle. It was the heartfelt message by the legendary player who played selflessly for the Indian Team for 19 long years and promoted Indian Football to its maximum.

Chhetri is the third-highest active international goal scorer after the duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Chhetri has scored 94 goals in International Football whereas Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi scored 128 and 106 goals, respectively. This makes Sunil Chhetri one of the best football players in Indian History despite his individual ranking being pretty much low.

Indian Skipper Sunil Chhetri Announces Retirement:

Sunil Chhetri said, “When I did decide that this was going to be my last game, I told my family about it. Dad was normal. He was relieved, happy, everything. It was my wife, strangely. I told her. You always used to bug me that there are too many games, and there’s too much of pressure. 

“Now I am telling you that I’m not going to play for my country anymore after this game. Even they couldn’t tell me why there were tears. It’s not that I was feeling tired, not that I was feeling this or that. When the instinct came that this should be my last game, I thought about it a lot, eventually, I came to this decision.”

Sunil Chhetri began his journey from Secunderabad, his raw talent led him to the third-highest goal scorer in International Football. He led the Indian National Football Team to victory in various tournaments including the Nehru Cup 2008, SAFF Championship 2011, Hero Intercontinental Cup 2018 and lots more.
