FIFA award: Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi was on Tuesday (Feb 28) named the best player in men’s football by FIFA at the Best FIFA Football Awards held in Paris. Lionel Messi beat Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema for the coveted trophy at the Salle Pleyel in Paris.
Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi was crowned the best player in men’s football at the Best FIFA Football Awards by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) on Tuesday. Messi, who led Argentina to their third FIFA World Cup title in Qatar last year, was nominated for the prestigious award along with Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema.
Messi was named the winner of the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award for his outstanding performance in men’s football from 8 August 2021 to 18 December 2022. FIFA first awarded the special award in its current form in 2016, ending its five-year partnership with the Ballon d’Or. The 35-year-old previously won the Best FIFA Men’s Player award during his trophy-laden stint at Barcelona. 2019.
Messi made his first appearance at the FIFA Gala in 2007. The former Barcelona captain was second only to Kaka in the FIFA World Player of the Year standings at the time. Lionel Messi won the FIFA Player of the Year award for the seventh time in Paris on Tuesday, 15 years later.
