The members taken in the 15th meeting of the BCCI Apex Council agreed to the proposal. BCCI secretary Jay Shah said that India’s women cricketers will earn match fees at par with their male counterparts in international matches, a significant step towards equal pay.
Mithali Raj Legendary Indian cricketer called the latest update from BCCI a “historic decision for women’s cricket in India”. Under this policy, India’s women cricketers get Rs 15 lakh for a Test, Rs 6 lakh for ODIs and Rs 3 lakh for T20Is, which is paid to male cricketers.
Said to be the first step towards banish gender discrimination, this increase is significant considering the pre-determined match fee of INR 1 Lakh per match for limited overs matches and INR 4 Lakh per Test.
There has been no change in the annual contract at this time – India’s women cricketers are placed in the same pay bracket as male cricketers, but their contracts are shorter.
The highest grade, Grade A, has an annual contract of Rs 50 lakh, while grade B and grade C earn Rs 30 lakh and Rs 10 lakh, respectively.
Newly appointed BCCI President Roger Binny said, “Today in our Apex Council meeting we have taken a major decision on pay equity for our women cricketers.
“Our women players will be paid the same match fees as men in international cricket. This decision sets the stage for the growth and development of cricket. I believe it will be good for women’s cricket and the game as a whole. Would be nice. Important. An important step.”
Shah reiterated that it was a “historic decision” in Indian cricket. “It was my commitment to our women cricketers and pay equity is an important step towards tackling discrimination.
