IPL 2024: Punjab Kings vs Gujarat Titans Match Highlights | Player of the Match & Points Table: The Mullanpur Stadium witnessed a thrilling encounter as the Gujarat Titans made a remarkable comeback against the Punjab Kings to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Chasing a modest target of 143, GT won by 3 wickets with 5 balls to spare, inspired by a late strike from the flamboyant Rahul Tewatia.
Punjab Kings, who came to bat first, had a great start and openers Prabhsimran Singh and Sam Curran made a partnership of 52 runs. However, his innings were spoiled by the quick fall of wickets.
The middle order faltered, leaving the team’s score at 99/7 after 16 overs. A late knock from Harpreet Brar, who scored 29 runs off 12 balls, gave Punjab a much-needed boost, taking them past the 140-run mark.
However, their total was still a modest total of 142 runs, with Sai Kishore being the best bowler for the Gujarat Titans, taking four wickets. Mohit Sharma and Noor Ahmed also took two wickets each, while Rashid Khan took one wicket.
Chasing the target, Gujarat had a bad start and lost their brilliant wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha early. However, youngster Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan carried the innings forward with a 40-run partnership.
Just when GT was gaining control, Liam Livingstone dismissed the dangerous David Miller and the in-form Gill. When the score was 89/4 and victory was going away, Rahul Tewatia arrived at the scene.
He played a stormy innings of 36 runs in just 18 balls and crossed the boundary with his trademark sixes. His aggressive batting rekindled Gujarat’s hopes and put pressure on Punjab.
Despite some late wickets falling, Tewatia’s heroics led GT to a thrilling win with 5 balls to spare. This match is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket, where fortunes can change in a matter of moments.
With this win, the Gujarat Titans demonstrated their resilience and ability to overcome adversity, making fans eagerly await their future performances in the tournament.
Punjab Kings Skipper Sam Curran: “I believe we fell short by about 10-15 runs. The bowlers put in a remarkable effort, displaying exceptional commitment and determination, but it wasn’t quite sufficient. The Afghanistan spinners are world-class bowlers and Sai Kishore bowled really well, credit to them.
Despite this being the third match on this pitch, achieving anything above 160 would have been considered par. Prabhsimran’s strong performance in the powerplay was noteworthy, but unfortunately, we lost momentum with a cluster of wickets thereafter. Moving forward, we understand the importance of winning every upcoming game.”
Gujarat Titans Skipper Shubman Gill: “We would have preferred to close out the match a bit earlier, but securing those two points is always satisfying.
Taking on the role of captaincy has been a thrilling experience for me, although there have been some challenges, particularly with the over-rate. When I’m batting, my focus is solely on playing my natural game without letting the captaincy responsibilities distract me.
Regarding the incident with Livingstone, the decision I made to get out would have been the same whether I was captaining or not, and it wasn’t influenced by any previous exchange.”
IPL 2024: PBKS vs GT Match No. 37 Sai Kishore, Player of the Match :
“Just trying to give my 120% for the team, playing after 20-25 days, so just wanted to go there, enjoy myself and give my everything. Under Ashish Nehra’s guidance, we’ve cultivated an environment where we can play fearlessly, irrespective of the outcome.
He encouraged me to enjoy the game and express myself freely, which boosted my confidence. I sensed the conditions well and relied on change of pace, which proved effective.
It was a collective effort from everyone, with Rahul delivering another stellar performance and Rashid and Noor bowling superbly. It feels great to contribute to such a cohesive team effort.”
