IPL 2024: Mallika Sagar to host the upcoming mini-auction becomes the first woman auctioneer | Another history to be made in Indian Premier League 2024: The IPL auction for 2024 will be a historic moment as independent professional auctioneer Mallika Sagar will become the first female auctioneer in the history of the tournament.
She will host the mini-auction in Dubai, replacing renowned auctioneer Hugh Adams, who has been hosting the IPL auction since 2018. Hugh Adams, who fainted due to “postural hypotension” during the IPL 2022 mega auction, will step down, making way for Mallika Sagar.
Amadeus’ price had suddenly fallen during the auction in Bengaluru, which he attributed to inadequate sleep and food. Despite Charu Sharma temporarily taking charge during the 2022 auction, Amadeus returned for the final edition.
Reflecting on the event, Adamides noted that the fall was unexpected and linked it to physical unpreparedness, citing lack of sleep and food.
He expressed that he thought it was coming, but he thought he could take a break after selling Hasaranga. However, the situation turned out differently and he was unexpectedly removed from the floor.
Mallika Sagar, a Mumbai-based art collector and consultant on modern and contemporary Indian art, has been appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to lead the proceedings of the IPL 2024 mini-auction in Dubai. This will be the first time that the auction will be held outside India, specifically at the Coca-Cola Arena on December 19.
BCCI has informed the franchises that Mallika Sagar will be the sole arbiter for all aspects of the auction. The 48-year-old auctioneer has been actively involved in the auction scene for the past two decades, having conducted her first auction in 2001.
She had earlier achieved a significant feat by becoming the first Indian to conduct an auction in the Indian T20 league during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023.
Mallika Sagar has prior experience in the sports sector, having conducted the Pro Kabaddi League auction in the 2021 edition. A total of 333 cricketers will feature in the upcoming IPL 2024 auction, which includes 214 Indians and 119 foreign players (including two from associate nations).
Franchises have the opportunity to secure a maximum of 77 slots, including 30 for overseas players, during the mini-auction to strengthen their squads.
