IPL 2024 Injured players: The 2024 Indian Premier League will kick off on March 22 with the first match between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings will look to defend their title and increase their tally to six trophies this time, as the other teams also look to improve their records.
The stage is set for the tournament to start but ahead of its commencement, there is one last bit that needs to be done. A number of players are currently injured and have already been replaced by their respective teams for the upcoming season. On the other hand, some players are doubtful for IPL 2024 and their replacements could be announced in the future. In this article, we shall talk about these very players.
Here is a list of three such players who will miss the 2024 Indian Premier League due to injuries:
1. Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami has, without a doubt, been a vital cog in the bowling attack of the Gujarat Titans in the last two years. Moreover, the way he performed in the 2023 ODI World Cup has proved that he is in sensational form and would have wreaked havoc in the Indian Premier League this season.
However, he has suffered an ankle injury and will miss the tournament. According to several reports, he does not want to risk his availability for the T20I World Cup, due to which he has opted out of the IPL 2024.
Mohammed Shami won the Purple Cap Award last season with 28 wickets in just 17-matches. Before that, in IPL 2022, he picked up 20 wickets in 16 matches. Thus, the Gujarat Titans will be without their best pace bowler this season. GT is yet to confirm who will replace him in the squad but Varun Aaron and Ishan Porel are emerging as possible options.
2. Gus Atkinson
Gus Atkinson is one of the newest additions to the Kolkata Knight Riders squad, whom they bought in the auction back in December for a bargain price of 1 crore rupees. However, the English player will be missing the tournament due to workload management and KKR has already replaced him with Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera.
Gus Atkinson has picked up 11 wickets in 9 ODI matches and 6 wickets in 3 T20I matches in his career so far. Chameera has much more experience working in his favor and that might be, in a way, good for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the long run. He has picked up 55 wickets in the same number of matches in T20Is and 56 wickets in 51 matches in ODIs.
3. Mark Wood
Lucknow Super Giants bought Mark Wood for Rs 7.5 crore back in the 2022 IPL Auction and later retained him in both 2023 and 2024. Unfortunately, he too will be unable to join the franchise for IPL 2024 due to workload management problems and LSG has replaced him with West Indies player Shamar Joseph.
In IPL 2023, Mark Wood played only four matches and picked up as many as 11 wickets, his best figures being 5/14. Shamar Joseph, who will replace him, has only played for West Indies in two test matches before and has picked up 13 wickets. Thus, he will be a surprise package in the 2024 IPL.
Other Injured players
There are three other injured players who are doubtful for IPL 2024 and their updates will be provided by their respective teams in a few days. They are, Rashid Khan of Gujarat Titans who has a back injury, Suryakumar Yadav of Mumbai Indians who has an ankle injury and sports hernia and Rishabh Pant of Delhi Capitals who is still recovering from his multiple injuries that he suffered in the tragic car accident last season.
