IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians Strongest Playing 11– The 2024 IPL Auction recently took place at the Coco – Cola Arena of Dubai and a huge amount of Money was spent by the IPL franchises on the 72 players that were bought by the teams.
5 time Champions Mumbai Indians were surrounded with controversies before the auction as they executed one of the biggest trade deal in the history of the Indian Premier League when they brought back Hardik Pandya in an all cash deal worth 15 crore rupees.
Not only that, the MI management even announced that Hardik Pandya will take over the captaincy duties from MI’s most successful skipper – Rohit Sharma a decision which came as a surprise to all the cricket fans around the world.
Talking about the auction, Mumbai Indians bought a total of 8 players which include 4 Indians and 4 Overseas players and spent a total of 16.7 crore rupees on these players. They were able to cover majority of their requirements at the 2024 IPL Auction.
The main focus of Mumbai was to go after pace bowlers who can provide support to Jasprit Bumrah and Mi did just at the auction table as they bought Gerald Coetzee (5 crore rupees), Dilshan Madushanka (4.60 crore rupees) and Nuwan Thushara (4.80 crore rupees).
Gerald Coetzee at a price of 5 crore rupees is an absolute steal as he is a a really good young fast bowler and he was the highest wicket taker for South Africa in the recently concluded 2023 ODI World Cup with 20 scalps next to his name in just 8 matches at an economy rate of 6.23.
He has a good short bowl and with the new rule of 2 short balls per over, he will have an important role to play alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Madhwal.
Dilshan Madushanka at 4.60 crore rupees is another good buy as the 23 year old was the standout performer for Sri Lanka in the recently concluded 2023 ODI World Cup. He picked up 21 wickets in 9 matches at an economy rate of 6.70 and showed that he is more than capable of bowling at all stages of the game.
Madushanka will have a clear understanding of what he needs to do to replicate his World Cup form in IPL 2024, having already played at the home stadium of Mumbai Indians, Wankhede Stadium, as well as other venues in the 2023 ODI World Cup. His World Cup experience can help him have a breakout IPL 2024 season for the Hardik Pandya led Mumbai Indians.
The addition of Nuwan Thushara is expected to provide some much needed depth to the pace bowling unit of Mumbai Indians. Thushara is fast bowler from Sri-Lanka and he has a slingy action similar to bowling coach Lasith Malinga and it would be interesting to see what sort of role he will play under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya.
The batting department is looking pretty solid with the presence of former captain Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Tilak Verma, Tim David and youngster Nehal Wadhera in the team. Hardik, Tim David and Nehal Wadhera are expected to handle the finishing duties while Rohit and Ishan will continue opening the innings.
Tilak Verma had a breakout season in IPL 2022 and was really good in this year’s IPL as well as he managed to score 343 runs in 11 games at a strike rate of 164.11 with an average of 42.88. His performances in the IPL led to his selection for Team India and he will be looking to have another good season for MI before next year’s 2024 T20 World Cup.
Ever Since the departure of Rahul Chahar to Punjab Kings, MI have struggled in terms of the spin department and have failed to find a proper replacement for the younger Chahar. Piyush Chawla is the main spinner of Mumbai and he was really good in IPL 2023 as he managed to pick up 22 wickets from 16 matches and last season was the best IPL season of the 34 year old leg spinner.
However, Chawla is not getting younger and Mi need to find a suitable replacement for him. Mi management added the likes of Mohammad Nabi (1.5 crore rupees) and Shreyas Gopal (20 Lakh rupees) to their roster for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.
But they are not consistent performers and Hardik Pandya will have to rely on the duo of Kumar kartikeya and Piyush Chawla to handle the spin bowling duties for the Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai completed their squad by buying uncapped players Anshul Kamboj ( 20 lakh rupees), Shivalik Sharma ( 20 lakh rupees and they are expected to improve the depth of the squad.
It would be intriguing to watch whether Hardik Pandya and his team can break MI’s three-year trophy drought or not.
