Football: Ronaldo says he will not play in European Championship after 2024:Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo announced on Tuesday that he will retire from the European Championship after Euro 2024.
Ronaldo said: “This is undoubtedly my last European Championship.
“But I am not sentimental about it. I am influenced by all that football means – by my enthusiasm for the game, by the enthusiasm of seeing my supporters, my family, by the affection people have for me.”
After having a penalty saved in extra time of the Slovenian match, he burst into tears.
“It is not about leaving the world of football,” he said. “What else is there for me to do or win? It is not going to be one point more or one point less.”
Ronaldo, 39, now holds the tournament’s all-time goal-scoring record with 14, and has a chance to score more when Portugal meets France in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo made his debut for his country at Euro 2004. He has since broken other tournament records, including most goals and most appearances. Ronaldo led Portugal to victory at Euro 2016, beating France 1-0.
