Zimbabwe announces new interim head coach for Sri Lanka tour.: Zimbabwe will have a new head coach for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka in January. Walter Chavaguta has been named the interim head coach of the Zimbabwe men’s senior national team for the tour of Sri Lanka.
This will be Chavaguta’s second stint as Zimbabwe head coach, having previously held the position in 2008. He is currently in charge of provincial first-class team Tuskers, while also working as a batting consultant for Zimbabwe Women over the years.
He will be accompanied by Stuart Matsikaneri (assistant coach/batting coach), Steve Kirby (bowling coach), Eric Choluka (fielding coach), Walter Karimanzira (fitness and conditioning trainer), Amato Machikicho (physiotherapist), Alistair Chambe (team doctor). and Mufaro Chiturumani (analyst).
Chavaguta’s appointment follows the resignation of former coach Dave Houghton on December 20 after Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup through the Africa Qualifier.
There were two places up for grabs in the Africa Qualifiers and Zimbabwe did not make the cut after finishing third in the table with four wins and two losses. Two defeats occurred in their first three matches – first against Namibia and then a disappointing loss against Uganda – but Zimbabwe bounced back by winning the remaining matches.
However, Namibia and Uganda retained their positions and finished in the top two positions to book their places for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Zimbabwe’s tour of Sri Lanka begins on January 6 with a three-match ODI series followed by three T20 matches. All games will be played at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.
