England’s unconvincing performance in ICC events marked Jos Buttler’s resignation from their captaincy. This event was marked after England’s humiliating loss against Afghanistan in the second match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Their 6-run loss knocked them out of the Champions Trophy, while the English were also knocked out from the group stages of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. After back-to-back disappointments in ICC tournaments, English management had to find a scapegoat to blame, and likely skipper Jos Buttler is the option.
Now, England recently reported that the ECB is also considering the likes of Ben Stokes, England’s red-ball captain, for the captaincy in white-ball limited-overs cricket as well.

Here are three contenders for England’s captaincy:
1. Ben Stokes

The England red-ball skipper has had considerable success ever since his appointment as the skipper of the longest format of the game for England. Likely Ben Stokes is now no longer a part of the ODI 11, yet he is still considered one of the finest options to take over the white-ball skipper of England as well.
Stokes is currently also the most experienced player in the English lineup and the best man for the role.
2. Harry Brook

The second key man on the English side is none other than the outstanding middle-order batter Harry Brook. The 25-year-old youngster has been their star across all formats, though Brook has struggled immensely over the recent ICC tournaments. His struggles in the Indian subcontinent have been unreal.
However, Harry Brook’s success might be considered handy for England, as he still has an immensely long career in front of him.
3. Liam Livingstone

Livingstone was handed the captaincy leadership role for the English side in the series last year against Australia; this marked the absence of Buttler from the 11 due to his injury. Liam was seen as a more responsible all-rounder down the order under the pretense of a skipper.
It was during this stint that Livingstone emerged as the world’s No. 1 all-rounder across the ODI and T20 formats ranked by the ICC. Livingstone is another key name in the role of the English skipper.
