The TATA IPL 2023 season is expected to be action-packed. The teams are all set to go and have all the basics covered. But there are a few flaws in each team. Some teams look perfect and some teams look very poor on paper. Some teams lack a finisher, some lack a fast bowler. Some find it difficult to have a good opener, while others do not have a middle-order batter. But these are flaws that can be covered if the teams have an effective strategy. Here is a quick look at 1 weakness of each TATA IPL team in the TATA IPL 2023 season:
Mumbai Indians: Lack a Seasoned Spinner in TATA IPL 2023.
The Mumbai Indians evidently lack a seasoned spinner. They are relying on Kumar Kartikeya to get the job done. But his sample size of performances is very poor. However, the silver lining of this issue is that Kumar Kartikeya had a very good Ranji Trophy. He was ranked among the best spinners. They also have the experience of Piyush Chawla in TATA IPL 2023 but Chawla is past his prime.
Chennai Super Kings: Lack a Proven Finisher in TATA IPL 2023.
The Chennai Super Kings are associating with MS Dhoni for his brand value. MS Dhoni is not the MS Dhoni of 2013, and his finishing skills are not at their peak. The Chennai Super Kings hence lack a good finisher. The other opposing teams will bring in players like Tim David, Andre Russell, Liam Livingstone, and Nicholas Pooran. Chennai does not have such an established name. One way to counter this is that they can ask Ravindra Jadeja to play as a finisher. But in that case,, his batting will remain underutilized in TATA IPL.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Over Dependence on Hasaranga and Harshal Patel.
Royal Challengers Bangalore is looking over-dependent on two players in two positions. They are relying on Hasaranga to take care of the spin department. They do not have any other established spinner in case Hasaranga gets injured or has a bad day. Royal Challengers Bangalore is expecting Glenn Maxwell and Mahipal Lomror to give them the remaining overs of spin. The same is the case with Harshal Patel. With Hazlewood’s availability being a concern, he will have to take care of the death overs. But if he fails, RCB will fail as a whole.
Rajasthan Royals: Have a Problem of Plenty in TATA IPL 2023.
Rajasthan Royals will have to solve the problem of plenty. They have good options for every position. They have to figure out if Yashasvi Jaiswal will open or will Devdutt Padikkal continue. Royals will also have to figure out whether Navdeep Saini plays or Kuldeep Sen plays. They also have to find out if Yuzi and R Ashwin play Zampa and R Ashwin play or if all the three spinners play. They just have many questions to solve. They will also have to give a role to Shimron Hetmyer.
Gujarat Titans: Do Not Have a Good Foreign Pacer.
Gujarat Titans evidently lack a foreign pacer. The other teams will come with options such as Jofra Archer, Anrich Nortje, KG Rabada, and Mark Wood. But the Titans do not have such an established name. They will have to rely on Alzarri Joseph to do the job for them. The other picked choice is Noor Ahmed. They shouldn’t have sold Lockie Ferguson.
Lucknow Super Giants: Lack a Good Indian Middle Order Batter.
The Lucknow Super Giants needed an Indian batter. They let go of Manish Pandey and could not find a better solution for his absence. They do have names like Krunal Pandya and Deepak Hooda in the middle-order but the last of the match-winning performances of Krunal Pandya was in the 2017 IPL final. Post that his numbers with the bat in the TATA IPL are decent. They desperately should have picked an Indian middle-order batter. Karun Nair, Vijay Shankar, or any other player would have worked for them.
Delhi Capitals: Lack a Decent Wicketkeeper Batter in TATA IPL 2023.
The unfortunate incident of Rishabh Pant has added to the woes of the Delhi Capitals. In his absence, they will have to look for a good wicketkeeper. In one of the practice sessions, it was seen that Sarfaraz Khan was keeping wickets. This shows us signs that he might be handed over the gloves for the time being. The other option that the Delhi camp has is Phil Salt. But in that case, Phil will occupy a foreign player slot.
Punjab Kings: Lack a Good Middle-Order Batter.
Punjab Kings lack two middle-order batters. Their finisher’s role lies in the hands of either Jitesh Sharma or Rishi Dhawan. They will have to find backups if that doesn’t work in their favor. Last season, the team had an option of Odean Smith, but this time around, that option is missing too. The team needs to change their combination in such a way that Liam Livingstone gets the finisher’s role. He is an established player and is currently in his prime.
Kolkata Knight Riders: Have a Poor Squad in TATA IPL 2023:
The Kolkata Knight Riders are the weakest team on paper. They will struggle big time if they do not plan well. They have just a few star players. The absence of Shreyas Iyer has done them no favor either. Big names like Andre Russell and Sunil Narine will have to come to the party. But players like Varun Chakravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer who are more like one-season wonders also have a chance to showcase their worth.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Lack a Good All-Rounder.
Robin Uthappa has openly criticized SRH and its auction strategy. He said, “How do you have the second largest prize pool in the auction and not bag one of the 3 top-allrounder?”. The Sunriser’s management is relying on Abhishek Sharma to give a few overs of his left-arm spin but he hasn’t been a bowler for a long time. The only all-rounder that they have is Washington Sundar.
