Rohit Sharma is the first Indian skipper with an exemplary record, leaving behind the likes of MS Dhoni, Kapil Dev, and Sourav Ganguly
GOAT Rohit Sharma - The greatest skipper in ICC cricket

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma attained the best stature for a team India captain after their historic win over the Aussies in the 1st semi-final of the ongoing Champions Trophy. India entered the finals of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy with this win over Australia in Dubai.

Rohit Sharma, with this, went on to be India’s greatest-ever captain and likely the first captain in the world to have led his side to the Finals of all four ICC championships. Under Rohit, India qualified for the ICC World Test Championship [2023], ICC World Cup [2023], ICC T20 World Cup [2024], and ICC Champions Trophy [2025], the finals of all these ICC events.

Rohit also led India to several Asia Cup wins and ended the Men in Blues long wait for an ICC trophy with a win in the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024.

Before this, Indian skipper Kapil Dev was the winner of one ICC World Cup in 1983, having taken India to their first-ever ICC final. Sourav Ganguly, the architect of modern-day Indian cricket and winner of the ICC Champions Trophy 2002, guided India twice as finalists of an ICC event, which also included the 2003 World Cup final loss to the Aussies.

MS Dhoni, arguably the greatest ever to have captained the Indian side, still remains India’s most successful skipper with the most number of ICC trophies. Under Dhoni, India played 4 ICC finals, of which they won the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy final, losing only once to defending champions Sri Lanka in the finals of the 2014 T20 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma earlier last year joined Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to be the third Indian skipper to have won an ICC event unshared since India shared the 2002 Champions Trophy with Sri Lanka, the only ICC title under the belt for Sourav Ganguly.

Rohit Sharma, having won the 2024 T20 World Cup, has another chance to extend his name further in the history of Indian cricket with a win in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy as well. The final is scheduled to be played on the 9th of March in Dubai against the winner of the South Africa vs. New Zealand 2nd semi-final.
