Australian legendary batsman Steve Smith has called it an end to his One-Day career just the day after Australia’s exit from the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy with a loss against India in the 1st semi-final.
The veteran batter was given the captaincy role in the Aussie side after Pat Cummins, the regular skipper, opted out of the Champions Trophy owing to both injury concerns as well as family responsibilities.
Smith led the Aussies to a massive victory over England in their opening match of the Champions Trophy when the Aussies chased an almost impossible-looking target of 350+. Australia qualified for the semi-finals despite their next two matches being washed out by rain.
The veteran Aussie batter played an iconic 73-run inning even in the final game of his career against India in the semi-final. Despite his most desperate efforts and smart captaincy, Smith could not take Australia over the line to the CT finals.
Steve Smith’s ICC trophies in a glorified limited-overs career

Steve Smith, the legendary Aussie cricketer who made his debut back in 2010, has had immense success in his decade-long limited-overs career with the Men in Yellow.
Steven Smith played 170 ODI matches in his career, with 154 innings being played by the veteran. Smith amassed 5800 one-day runs at a career average of 43.28, with 12 hundred and 35 half-centuries to his name.
In the 170 matches, Smith has played in 3 World Cups, around 5 T20 World Cups, and 2 Champions Trophies. With Steve Smith showing prior interest in representing Australia in the 2028 Olympics, which will be played in the shortest format of the game, Smith still remains with the Aussie side in the T20 format.
Smith has won 2 of the 3 ICC World Cups he represented Australia in, the first being the home World Cup back in 2015 and the next in 2023 in India. Smith also was part of Australia’s Aaron Finch-led squad in the T20 World Cup 2021, which won its maiden title in the UAE.
Steve Smith ended his ODI career with 418 runs in his ICC ODI knockouts career, averaging a stunning 69.66 in the 7 innings he appeared in, with the matches being the semi-finals and finals of the 2015 World Cup, semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, semi-finals and finals of the 2023 World Cup, and the semi-final of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Smith goes down with only the Champions Trophy being the trophy missing in his cabinet; however, he would still be seen starring for Australia in Tests and T20s, the latest being the WTC final later this year.
