Marcus Stoinis emerged as the hero of the night, defying expectations and playing a brilliant innings. Due to dew in Chepauk, LSG won the toss and decided to field.
CSK had a mixed start with Ajinkya Rahane getting out early. Ruturaj Gaikwad along with Daryl Mitchell took the innings forward.
Despite Mitchell’s early dismissal, Gaikwad’s brilliant unbeaten 108 and Shivam Dubey’s explosive 66 off 27 balls took CSK to 210.
In the second innings, despite a poor start with early losses including Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul, LSG found themselves vulnerable.
Pressure with a huge target of 211. The pace of the game changed dramatically as Stoinis changed gears dramatically, pairing first with Nicholas Pooran and then Deepak Hooda.
Stoinis not only played a brilliant inning of 124 runs off 63 balls, but his innings also included a high-octane final over where he won with three balls to spare.
LSG Captain KL Rahul: “Very special. It was very special to pull it off from where we were before. Different conditions here. I think they started off really well and put us under pressure. 170-180 would’ve been a great total here but they batted really well. Full credit to Stoinis. It was not just power hitting, it was very clever batting. You need to go harder in the powerplay and the impact player rule also gives you a bit more depth. There’s no set plan, apart from the openers, everyone else is ready to go out whenever we feel it’s right.”
CSK Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad: “Tough to accept, but good game of cricket. LSG played well. We had the game in control till 14 overs, but Stoinis played a great innings. Dew played a part and it took our spinners out of the game. Otherwise, we could have controlled the game better and taken it deeper. But these are parts of the game. Jaddu is batting at number 4 since we lost the second wicket within the powerplay. I thought our target wasn’t enough.”

Marcus Stoinis: “There were some bowlers we wanted to target and some bowlers we wanted to be more cautious against. There was a phase where I wasn’t able to hit the boundaries so it was great Pooran could come in and take the pressure off. Lots of ebbs and flows, just tried to keep it in control. I do think T20 cricket is changing, the impact player role and how teams are taking on the bowlers. On the playing front, I’d like to play and contribute.”
