Chetan Sharma, the chief of the selection committee, has been sacked by the BCCI. Along with Chetan, the other members have also been sacked. The other members are Sunil Joshi, Debashish Mohanty, and Harvinder Singh. The BCCI members have decided to “move on” from the current selector committee. “The selectors knew it was coming,” a BCCI official had to say. Here is an in-depth look at the same:
BCCI looking for Selectors with better knowledge of T20I:
T20 cricket is on the rise. It is a format that gets the bucks rolling. It is a format that is loved by the people. India won the last T20 World Cup in 2007. Post that, Indian cricket has reached new heights. The IPL was established. It took the domestic circuit to a whole new level. With that being said, India is yet to win their second T20 World Cup. So, the BCCI is looking for selectors who will be having good knowledge of selecting players for the shortest format.
Many Decisions were Under Scrutiny:
There were several decisions of the selection committee that was under scrutiny. But with a 1.5 billion population and only 15 guys to select, criticism is bound to happen. The selection of a 1-dimensional top-order in the form of KL, Rohit, and Virat, the sacking of Mohammed Shami for over a year, only to bring him back just before the World Cup and the lack of opportunities for players like Samson, Tripathi, and Pandey are a few examples. There is also a lot of criticism around the fact that the BCCI fast-tracked the recovery of pace-sensation Jasprit Bumrah.
Over the years we have seen many such controversial decisions taking place. The choice to drop Ambati Rayudu to play Vijay Shankar at the 2019 ODI World Cup. The choice to drop Harbhajan Singh to play R Ashwin. There are many such examples.
Eligibility Criteria for the Selection Committee of the BCCI:
“Candidates who wish to apply for the said position need to fulfill the following criteria for their applications should have played a minimum of 7 Test matches, OR 30 First Class matches; OR 10 ODI and 20 First Class matches. Further, they should have retired from the game at least 5 years ago and no person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee (as defined in the rules and regulations of BCCI) for a total of 5 years shall be eligible to be a member of Men’s Selection Committee.”
