India yesterday after having secured the bronze medal in the Men’s Hockey, remained in anticipation for the participation of their Golden boy, Neeraj Chopra.
India were already amid some controversy since the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat. The fighter girl made her way into the finals with pride as in her way she also defeated the mighty Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Suzaki in the Round of 16 encounter.
She suffered a major blow as she was disqualified owing to an increase of 100 grams in her weight for the Women’s 50 kg category.
Secondly India’s Tokyo silver medalist, Mirabai Chanu was also denied a medal spot on the finals of 49 kg weightlifting as she missed the bronze just by a whisker of a single point.
The Indian Men’s Hockey team emerged as Bronze medalist for the second time since Tokyo Olympics and also paid a worthy farewell to the supposedly retired PR Sreejesh.
Next in queue stood India’s pride in the Olympics, Neeraj Chopra for his Men’s Javelin throw finals. He took the field to secure a season best throw of 89.45m however, still this was not the best effort to defend his Gold as Pakistan thrower Arshad Nadeem earned an Olympic record throw of 92.97m in his second attempt to deny anyone a spot for Gold.
This remains a historic performance by any Field athlete for India and though it would also remain as a bittersweet memory for Neeraj as even his best got surpassed due to an exemplary effort from the arch rival athlete who scripted true history. Now finally India have 4 bronze and a silver medal this year, with Aman Sherawat going for his bronze medal match next.
