Premier League side Everton FC faced a record 10-point deduction after breaching the Premier League profit and sustainability rules. But a successful appeal reduced their punishment to a deduction of six points. The side climbed two spots to reach 15th position in the table. They are currently five points ahead of the sides in the relegation zone.
Last November, Everton faced the most significant sporting penalty in the history of the Premier League. A breach of financial regulations amounting to €19.5 million was registered against their name. A three-person headed appeal board determined that Everton had committed legal errors on two counts. But they received a lift in their fight after a partially successful appeal restoring four of the ten points.

Everton faces punishment for breaching Premier League financial rules
Sportstar reports the club said in a statement, “We understand the Appeal Board considered the 10-point deduction originally imposed to be inappropriate when assessed against the available benchmarks of which the Club made the Commission aware, including the position under the relevant EFL regulations, and the 9-point deduction that is imposed under the Premier League’s own rules in the event of insolvency.
The Club is also particularly pleased with the Appeal Board’s decision to overturn the original Commission’s finding that the Club failed to act in utmost good faith. That decision, along with reducing the points deduction, was an incredibly important point of principle for the Club on appeal. The Club, therefore, feels vindicated in pursuing its appeal.“
Everton argued that the 10-point deduction was completely inappropriate and unfair. To challenge this decision the club enlisted the expertise of KC Laurence Rabinowitz to lead the appeal. The appeal was heard by three three-member committees from January 31st to February 2nd, during which Everton successfully contested the severity of the punishment.
Everton announced that they are still assessing the broader ramifications of the ruling and will refrain from providing additional statements at this juncture. They thanked their Fan Advisory Board, other fan groups, and all Everton supporters for their continued support and patience throughout the process.
