Mason Greenwood got a price tag of around £34 million from Manchester United this summer. The English winger who spent this season on loan at Getafe has been in demand among top clubs. The forward has been impressive in the La Liga scoring seven goals and five assists in his 24 appearances.

The English footballer, who has only represented England once, hasn’t played for Manchester United since January 2022, when he was arrested based on accusations of rape and assault shared online. Subsequently, Greenwood faced additional charges of sexual assault and making threats to kill while under arrest, leading to his suspension by Manchester United while investigations unfolded. Despite being scheduled for trial on charges including attempted rape and assault causing bodily harm, as well as accusations of coercive and controlling behavior last November, all charges against the 22-year-old were eventually dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in transfer battle for Greenwood

The Red Devils have reportedly attracted interest from Spanish clubs like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. His contract stays till 2025 with Man United but will not play for them again. Additionally, the likelihood of him securing a future with an English club appears very slim given his circumstances, effectively eliminating opportunities for potentially lucrative contracts in the process.

Manchester United would benefit from generating more interest in his services, especially considering that Barcelona’s financial situation is unstable, thereby restricting the amount they would be willing to invest in acquiring him.

As reported by German outlet Fussball News, Manchester United has placed a price tag of £34 million on Greenwood. However, they might face pressure to negotiate for a lower fee, considering the risk of the forward potentially leaving for free in 2025.

Before his first arrest, Greenwood played in 129 games for Manchester United’s senior team, scoring 35 goals and providing 12 assists after graduating from the club’s academy. He made his debut for the English national team against Iceland in the Nations League back in 2020. However, both Greenwood and Phil Foden from Manchester City were later dismissed by Gareth Southgate for violating COVID-19 protocols.
