Rohit Sharma has become the topic of discussion because of his form. He is going through a rough patch at the moment, and his numbers are continuously declining. He has only scored 22 runs in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
That has sparked rumours about the possible retirement of the Indian captain. India have already seen one retirement as Ravichandran Ashwin announced his international retirement after the third test at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Some media reports even reported there might be another retirement from the Indian camp after the series. One set of fans speculated about Rohit Sharma’s retirement. Some believe the Indian captain might decide to quit the longest format after his horrid run in form, while others hope that he might return in form pretty soon.
IND vs AUS: BCCI denies reports claiming Rohit Sharma’s retirement after the Sydney Test
Rohit Sharma has been struggling badly with his form and is having a hard time in the middle. He returned back to his normal position at the top of the order at the MCG, but it didn’t help much. That has raised questions on his place and captaincy in Test cricket.
However, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has denied all such reports. According to a report from Insidesport, a BCCI official revealed that there have been no talks from Rohit about quitting Test cricket, and all such are rumours.
A senior BCCI official said, “There has been no discussion of retirement with Rohit. All are baseless rumours, and we don’t comment on rumours. It’s not the first time that we have heard such rumours. He is going through a tough time, but whether he should retire is a call he has to take. We haven’t heard anything about it from Rohit.”
Should Rohit Sharma retire from Test cricket?
The Indian captain has been going through a horrible time. His test form is totally contrasting to his white-ball form. In the last ten test innings, Rohit has only one fifty, which he scored 52 runs against Bangladesh. Apart from that, he has three double-digit scores, with the second-highest score of 18.
Though that doesn’t justify his ability and skillset, it has certainly impacted his mindset. The retirement call is totally up to him. But after this series, India have a number of white-ball assignments, including the Champions Trophy 2025. He can go back, regain his form, and then decide whether to retire or continue.
