Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who is currently on England’s test tour, caused a stir on social media with his controversial post which apparently promotes the Lovely Professional University (LPU), Punjab. Kohli in the tweet and his posts across social media heaped praises on the LPU for its contributions to the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2021.

The cricketer in his tweets and posts stated that 10 per cent of Indian Olympians belongs to LPU and also expected to get prominent contributions in the sport of cricket from the university.

“What a record, 10% of Indian Olympians are from Lovely Professional University. I hope LPU will send students to the Indian cricket team also! Jai Hind,” wrote Virat Kohli in his tweet.

Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) came into action after the tweet surfaced all over the social media platforms. The tweet and posts from Kohli regarding LPU and its contribution didn’t have any promotional tag even though it contains the official social media handles of the university and the hashtag promoted by the Punjab based University #LPUStudentsInOlympics.

According to ASCI, Kohli missed the important disclosures that are required to be specified while promoting anything.

“The ASCI will take up the issue and write to the celebrity and the advertiser for their clarifications,” said Manisha Kapoor, the secretary-general of the ASCI.

With ASCI taking action on the cricketer, he can be in huge trouble ahead of India vs England test series and might have to retrieve his tweet and posts from his social media.

Virat Kohli’s has been atop of the Indian celebrities and is also competing with the Football stars in the global market. The cricketer has over 228 million followers across all the social media platforms and is the most followed Indian celebrity.
