Vijay Hazare Trophy: Venkatesh Iyer Fails to Fire, Falls Cheaply Against Kerala

Vijay Hazare Trophy

Vijay Hazare Trophy: The Vijay Hazare Trophy continues to throw up talking points ahead of the IPL season, and this time the spotlight was firmly on Venkatesh Iyer. Making a much-anticipated appearance for Madhya Pradesh against Kerala at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the all-rounder endured a disappointing outing, falling for just eight runs in a brief stay at the crease.

Early Exit After Costly Mix-Up

Expectations were high the moment Iyer walked out to bat, especially after his recent move to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for ₹7 crore at the IPL 2026 mini auction. Known for his aggressive intent and ability to change games quickly, the left-hander looked set to launch before an unfortunate mix-up ended his innings.

Attempting a quick single with Himanshu Mantri, Iyer hesitated midway, allowing Kerala fielder Krishna Prasad to effect a sharp run-out. The dismissal left Iyer stranded well short of his crease and marked another low return in a phase where every performance is being closely scrutinized.

Auction Price Drop Still a Talking Point

Iyer’s early dismissal has once again reignited discussions around his form and role, especially after a dramatic shift in his IPL valuation. RCB secured him for ₹7 crore, a significant drop from the ₹23.75 crore Kolkata Knight Riders had spent to retain him ahead of last season.

While the reduced price tag reflects his struggles in recent months, it hasn’t diminished belief in his potential. At RCB, however, questions remain over how and when he fits into a side that lifted the IPL title last season and boasts a settled core.

Kumble and Bangar Weigh In on Iyer’s RCB Role

Former India captain Anil Kumble feels RCB are unlikely to rush Venkatesh Iyer straight into the playing XI when the season begins. According to Kumble, the defending champions are keen to preserve the balance of a well-oiled unit, which could mean Iyer may need to wait patiently for his chance.

Echoing similar views, former India all-rounder and JioStar expert Sanjay Bangar acknowledged Iyer’s quality and confidence but admitted breaking into a settled lineup won’t be easy. Bangar noted that RCB’s coaching and scouting team view Iyer as a long-term investment, even if his immediate role remains unclear.

“There is some doubt about whether he starts right away, simply because this is a settled and successful team,” Bangar said, underlining the competition for spots.

Strong Career Numbers, But Recent Struggles

Venkatesh Iyer entered the auction with a base price of ₹2 crore and attracted interest from Lucknow Super Giants, Gujarat Titans, and his former franchise KKR, before RCB won the bidding.

Across 56 IPL innings, Iyer has scored 1,468 runs at an average of 29.12, striking at over 137, with one century and 12 half-centuries to his name. However, his most recent IPL campaign was forgettable, managing just 142 runs in seven innings for KKR.

Domestic Form Under the Scanner

With the IPL season approaching, performances in tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy carry extra weight. For Venkatesh Iyer, this early dismissal is a setback, but also a reminder that consistency will be key if he is to force his way into RCB’s plans.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will remain on whether the Madhya Pradesh all-rounder can bounce back and rebuild momentum ahead of a crucial phase in his career.
