The specialty of the match was that Delhi wasted chances on the field, which proved costly. Chasing the target of 175 runs, the Punjab team made a strong start with Dhawan and Bairstow but faltered for a while.
Batting at No. 4 with Prabhsimran Singh, Sam Curran took advantage of DC’s fielding flaws to keep the scoreboard ticking. Despite a late effort by Khaleel Ahmed to turn the match in DC’s favor by taking two wickets in the 19th over, Curran’s crucial 63 runs set the stage.
Earlier, DC had set a target of 174 runs, which was boosted by a 25-run attack in the last over. Despite a good start, DC’s batsmen, including Warner and Marsh, failed to score.
Shai Hope’s 33 runs was the highest score, with Abhishek Porel’s cameo also adding to his total. Punjab’s bowlers, especially Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel, kept things tight, taking two wickets each.
The match underlined the importance of fielding and seizing the moments, with Punjab Kings beating Delhi Capitals to start their campaign with a win.

Captain Rishabh Pant: “Losing Ishant to injury really affected us, essentially leaving us a bowler short. Abishek’s performance was a highlight, but being a bowler down made it tough.
Despite the nerves, I felt our score was competitive, but Ishant’s absence due to injury put us at a disadvantage. We’re not looking for excuses, but playing short-handed on this pitch was a challenge.
Abishek’s innings was exceptional, especially considering his limited experience; his effort really lifted our finale.”
Captain Shikhar Dhawan: “It’s a fantastic feeling to start with a win. Being back on the field and gearing up for this tournament has been my focus since the last IPL ended.
I won’t lie, stepping into this competitive arena again had me a bit nervous. After the explosive last over, I chose not to engage with anyone immediately since I was about to bat, and I believe in giving the bowlers their space to process their emotions. We’ve got time tomorrow to regroup, discuss, and enhance our game for the better.”
