Shreyas Iyer, the star Indian batter, has been ruled out of the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand owing to an injury. The Mumbai batter has been India’s top batter in the last year. He was the backbone of the middle order. That said, Iyer is now out due to a back injury. The grade or level of injury has not been disclosed yet, as Iyer has traveled to the NCA for further scans. Here is an in-depth look:
Shreyas Iyer Ruled Out of NZ ODI Series:
The BCCI released a media advisory that said, “Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury. He will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management.” In the recently concluded 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, Iyer was consistent in getting the starts but failed to convert them to big totals. He had a string of scores saying 28,28 and 38.
Rajat Patidar Named Replacement for Shreyas Iyer:
Rajat Patidar will replace Shreyas Iyer. Patidar has been a rage in the domestic circuit for the past two years. He has been bashing the domestic bowlers. One cannot easily forget his hundred in the eliminator that helped RCB move onto the next stage in the IPL. It was an inning of a lifetime. In his list A career Patidar has played 50 games at an average of 34.33. He has amassed 1648 runs at a strike rate of 93.25.
Patidar has always been with the team for the past few series. He may not have got an opportunity to come to the field but he has been with the team for the 3rd or 4th ODI series. The media advisory said, “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Rajat Patidar as a replacement for Shreyas Iyer. India plays the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad on 18th January 2023.”
Suryakumar Yadav to Get Picked in the Playing XI:
The most like-to-like change to fill the void of Shreyas Iyer would be to pick Suryakumar Yadav who is in the form of his life. He is also a Mumbaikar and has made a strong case for himself with his performances in the T20 format. So, Rajat Patidar will still have to wait for his international debut.
