Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, and the most successful captain in the history of the TATA IPL has decided to skip the initial few games of the TATA IPL 2023. He has taken this decision, keeping in mind the workload that he has for the national team. This was initially reported by the Indian Express and then affirmed by many other media outlets. However, there isn’t any official announcement as of now.

In the post-match conference after the recently concluded India VS Australia ODI series when Rohit was asked about workload management for the players who have national duties, this is what he said, “It’s all up to the franchises now. They own them now. We have given some indications to the teams, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the franchises. And more importantly, it’s up to the players. They are all adults; they have to look after their bodies. If they feel it’s getting a bit too much, they can talk about it and take a break in one or two games. I doubt if that will happen.”

It was clear that Rohit Sharma expected his players to understand and take a call.

The “interim captain” for the Mumbai Indians during this phase is going to be their vice-captain, Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar Yadav has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians since 2018 when Rohit Sharma promoted him to open the batting. Yadav has grown in the ranks ever since. The Mumbai Indians’ batter has been the best for them since 2018. He has been their top scorer since 2018.

Surya missed the last season of the IPL due to a thump injury but his presence will be valuable this season. The young players in the camp look up to Surya as a leader and this time he has an added responsibility.
