The T20 World Cup 2024 is just one sleep away from now. The tournament opener will be played on June 1, which will kick off this 20-team tournament. This time, the USA and West Indies will jointly host this competition, where the top 20 teams will try their luck. As per some former cricketers and cricket experts, this will be a spin-dominant tournament because of the slow pitches in USA and West Indies.
That’s why all the participating teams have focused mainly on spinners. The top eight teams from the group stage will make it to the Super 8, where the four semi-finalists will be decided. Well, T20 cricket is a batter’s game where bowlers don’t have much to do. The conditions and rules have also benefited batters in recent times. But some of the best bowlers will be taking part in this tournament, which will be the main highlight of the T20 World Cup 2024.
T20 World Cup 2024: Ricky Ponting backs Jasprit Bumrah to pick up the most wickets in the tournament
Every team has picked up the best possible bowling unit as per the conditions in T20 world Cup 2024, and we might see a spinner picking up the most wickets in the tournament. However, former Australian World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting has a different view of it. While speaking to the ICC, Ponting reveals his choice of bowler, whom he is backing to take the most wickets. Surprisingly, he didn’t name a spinner, but he picked Jasprit Bumrah to be the highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
He said, “My leading wicket-taker for the tournament will be Jasprit Bumrah. I just think an outstanding performer, contributor for a number of years now. He’s just come off an outstanding IPL. What he can do with the new ball, he swings the new ball, he has the seam up. But at the end, his economy rate at the end of the IPL was less than seven runs an over.” Notably, Bumrah ended the recently concluded IPL 2024 as the third-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.
He was rested in the last game and ended up taking 20 wickets in 13 matches at an incredible economy rate of 6.48. He had the best economy rate in the competition, where the batters were going around 200 strike rate. Bumrah’s ability to swing the ball both ways and his ability to bowl perfect yorkers and bouncers, make him a tough bowler to face. Furthermore, Ponting also praised Bumrah because he bowls tough overs in the game. The Indian pacer has been in red-hot form and is performing across formats. It won’t be a surprise if he ends up taking the most wickets in the T20 World Cup 2024.
