MS Dhoni Breaks Viewership Record. 1.7 Crore People See his 3 Balls, 2 Sixes in TATA IPL 2023.

Here is a quick look at how MS Dhoni's presence has led to a surge in viewership. 1.7 crore viewers rolled in to see Thala bat.

MS Dhoni, the face of the Chennai Super Kings and the face of the TATA IPL 2023, has registered his name in record books, once again. Thala, as he is popularly known by his fans, has broken the record for the highest viewership. The viewership crossed 1.7 crores on the online streaming platform of Jio Cinema during his innings in the recently concluded LSG VS CSK game. He broke his own record. The earlier one was set during his first innings of the tournament in the first game of the TATA IPL 2023. Here is an in-depth look:

MS Dhoni is a phenomenon in IPL cricket and cricket in general. He is the boss of this game. There was an immediate surge in viewers as soon as he walked out to bat in the two instances when he has come out to bat. Jio Cinema reported unreal numbers. This just shows the craze of this man in India and in the cricket community. The first instance was against the Gujrat Titans when MS Dhoni came to bat in the far end. The record was set during that inning with 1.6 crore or 16 million viewers.  

But this very record was broken during the second game of the Chennai Super Kings. Here the viewership hit 1.7 crores or 17 million when MS Dhoni came out to bat. It was a short 3-ball inning in the final over of the 1st innings of the LSG VS CSK match. MS Dhoni hit 2 sixes out of the 3 balls he played and was dismissed on the third one. It shows that the cricket community respects the impact that a player has.  

Star TV Network Shows an Increment in Viewership by 29%:

On the other hand, Star TV Network, the official broadcaster of the TATA IPL, showed an increment of 29% in viewership. Star TV network reported 8.7 billion minutes of consumption in the 1st 3 games of the season. There was a 12% drop last year, and these ratings have shattered any doubts that analysts had on the viewership. 140 million users saw the games on Live TV during the TATA IPL 2023 beginning.  

Star TV Network wasn’t expecting large numbers as it also lost the live streaming rights to Viacom 18 Limited. Jio Cinema is the official streaming service of the TATA IPL 2023. But these numbers might have encouraged the spirit of Star TV. What helped Star TV network is the crash of Jio Cinema on day 1. But the crash of Jio Cinema was also due to the unplanned surge. Jio Cinema expected 6 to 7 million viewers but 12 to 13 million showed up.

Further, the numbers on Disney+Hotstar are great. Star TV Network has bought its “A” game in terms of marketing. They have been promoting the TATA IPL 2023 for the past 1 month. Their TV and build-up shows slowly inclined the audience to watch the sport on live television instead of the streaming service.
