Kohli Rohit 2027 World Cup : Will Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma play in the 2027 World Cup? A lot of doubts about this are going viral on social media after cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar shared his opinion that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will not participate in the ODI World Cup to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Both cricketers retired from Test cricket in 2025 and T20 Internationals in 2024, leaving ODIs as the only format they play for Team India.
Fans are upset by Gavaskar’s claim and feel that these cricket legends may not be seen in the upcoming 2027 World Cup.
So, what’s the matter? We’ve explained it in today’s article, so let’s dive in.
Sunil Gavaskar’s Bold Opinion on Kohli Rohit 2027 World Cup
Sunil Gavaskar recently shared his thoughts with a news channel, stating that he doesn’t believe either player will feature in the ODI World Cup. He was quite honest about this.
He pointed out that Rohit Sharma is currently 38 years old and Virat Kohli is 36, and by 2027, they will be 40 and 38, respectively. Because of their age, their fitness and form may not be the same, which is why he thinks we won’t see them playing in the 2027 World Cup.
However, he added that if they keep scoring centuries and delivering strong performances, “even God cannot drop them.” Sunil Gavaskar emphasized this point further.

Selectors Hold the Key
Gavaskar feels that Kohli and Rohit’s chances for the 2027 World Cup depend on the selectors. The selectors will question whether these two can still deliver their best at this age.
Rohit’s recent ODI form has been somewhat inconsistent, and he has also been an impact substitute for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 due to fitness issues.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli scored 505 runs in IPL 2025, delivering an outstanding performance, but he has struggled in the ODI format since the 2023 World Cup.
With 27 ODIs scheduled before 2027, their performances in these matches will determine whether they’re considered for the 2027 World Cup.
Kohli and Rohit’s Ambitions
Virat Kohli has openly said he wants to play in the 2027 World Cup and win the title he missed in 2023. Rohit Sharma, who led India to the 2023 final, has said he’s keeping all his options open and wants to play in the 2027 World Cup in some capacity.
Both performed well in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where India won the trophy in Dubai. Kohli scored a century against Pakistan, and Rohit Sharma contributed 76 runs in the final.
India’s Future Without the Legends
If Rohit and Kohli miss the 2027 World Cup, India will rely on young stars like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant.
The team is scheduled to face Bangladesh in an ODI series in August 2025, but due to tensions, India may skip it.
A three-match ODI series is confirmed in Australia in October 2025, and the selectors will closely monitor Kohli and Rohit during this outing.
