Kane Williamson is poised to return to New Zealand’s T20i team after the Kiwis confirmed his selection for the home T20i series against Bangladesh, and he will also lead the Kiwis in the series against the Bangla Tigers. Williamson returns to T20 Internationals after a one-year absence, having not played an international T20 match since November of last year. He was also injured for around 6 months during this time.
Devon Conway has been rested for the T20I’ s against Bangladesh, while Michael Bracewell, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, and Henry Shipley are all ruled out due to injury. Trent Boult, who did not sign the central contract, has declared himself ineligible for selection.
Kane Williamson’s last T20I was against India in November of last year. During the opening match of this year’s IPL, he suffered a leg injury that required surgery. Following that, he returned to international cricket in the recently concluded ODI World Cup. All-rounder James Neesham has returned to the T20I squad, and young seamer Ben Sears has been added to the squad as well.
“The way we prepared separately for the ODI World Cup and players like Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman emerged, in the same way we are preparing for the T20 World Cup,” team coach Gary Stead said. Tim Seifert is one such name for us who can contribute significantly in the top order during the T20 World Cup. The T20 World Cup is quite far away so we have more than enough time to try more young players for particular roles before next year’s mega event. We are making plans according to the tournament’s circumstances.”
