IPL 2025 MI vs PBKS Highlights Qualifier 2: Punjab Kings reaches finals; Shreyas Iyer eyes continuous IPL titles

MI vs PBKS Highlights Qualifier 2: The Mumbai Indians, 5-time champions and experienced playoff side, have appeared in the playoffs in over 11 seasons, while they take on the Punjab Kings, who are not known to have considerable success in the playoff stages, having made it to just 3 of them, including this season.

However, PBKS were the runners-up back in 2014, while the Mumbai Indians last lifted the trophy back in 2020 and have made it to just one playoff in the last 4 seasons before this. However, under skipper Pandya, after a humiliating last-place finish last time around, the Mumbai Indians bounced back after a lagging start in this season as well and made it this far into the Qualifier 2.

Shreyas Iyer targets consecutive IPL titles. Both Iyer and Hardik have the chance to be the first IPL skippers to have won the trophy with two different franchises, as Iyer lifted the cup with the Kolkata Knight Riders and Hardik with the Gujarat Titans back in 2024 and 2022, respectively.

MI vs PBKS Highlights Qualifier 2: Mumbai Indians put on joint efforts to set a big 200+ target

MI’s dynamic batters attempts in vain

The Mumbai Indians’ opening duo could not put on a big stand, as Rohit Sharma was dismissed quite early; however, Bairstow has brought some form alongside him into this IPL. Jonny Bairstow and Tilak Varma went on to give a great lead in the powerplay; however, after his dismissal, it was Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav’s 70-run stand for the 3rd wicket that gave the real momentum to the Mumbai batting innings.

Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav were MI’s best batters, both having scored 44 runs coming into bat at no. 3 and no. 4, respectively. Suryakumar Yadav now has 717 runs in this edition of the IPL, and the Indian T20 skipper becomes the second batter in this edition to have completed 700+ runs in this season and has enlisted himself among the few batters to have scored 700+ runs in one season.

Naman Dhir, the batter at no. 6, scored an invaluable 37 runs coming at the back end of the MI innings, as the batter was striking boldly at an above 200+ strike rate. Mumbai Indians scored a 200+ total and have faced a big challenge in front of one of the finest batting units of the season.

MI vs PBKS Highlights Qualifier 2: Catch Drop and Match Drop! Proven right by Wadhera

Shreyas Iyer takes PBKS into Finals

Mumbai Indians started off well in the powerplay, as Trent Boult picked up the early wicket of Prabhsimran Singh in the third over of the powerplay after having bowled 2 tight overs. Priyansh Arya got off to a good start but ended his innings to Ashwani Kumar’s first ball in the powerplay.

After Josh Inglis, with some great hits, took the PBKS innings ahead, he was dismissed by the MI skipper himself. However, the game turned a complete 360 since Inglis’ dismissal as the MI’s fielding unit made several blunders. Nehal Wadhera, the left-handed middle-order batter, was dropped three times in the game, first due to a misjudged catch at deep mid-wicket from Naman Dhir for 2 runs, followed by another easy drop chance by Boult, and finally by Bumrah off his own bowling on 37.

After being dropped on multiple occasions, Nehal Wadhera took to the partnership alongside Shreyas Iyer, who took a huge 19-run over against Topley that earned a major lead for the Punjab Kings. Despite Wadhera’s late dismissal, Shreyas Iyer took guard of the chase as he extended PBKS’s lead.
