Iyer’s back injury occurred during the India-Australia Test Series, but KKR reported that he is improving and hoped that he will eventually play in the season.

Instead of selecting a foreign player like Andre Russell or Sunil Narine, two former players of the Kolkata-based team, KKR has picked 29-year-old Indian batsman Nitish Rana as his replacement.

Rana has been associated with KKR since the 2018 campaign. KKR said in a statement that Nitish, who has captaincy experience from leading his state team in white-ball cricket and IPL experience he has had with KKR since 2018, will do a great job.

While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some point in the IPL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the IPL experience he has had with KKR since 2018, will do a great job.

We are also convinced that under the leadership of head coach Chandrakant Pandit and the support staff, he will receive all the support required off the pitch, and the team’s highly accomplished leaders will offer Nitish any support he may require on the pitch. We wish Shreyas a full recovery and the best of luck in her new role .

With 1744 runs scored in 74 games at an average of 27.68, Rana is the fifth-highest scorer in KKR history. He has led Delhi for a lot of years in domestic cricket, and KKR will benefit from that expertise.

All of the left-handed batter’s Team India appearances—1 ODI, 2 T20I came during the Men in Blue’s 2021 white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.
Rana previously played for the Mumbai Indians (MI), who won the IPL in 2017 thanks in large part to his contributions.
