The Australian skipper has flown to Sydney immediately after the 2nd test in Delhi concluded. He moved back to Australia due to a serious health issue in his family. However, the management has planned it so well that Cummins will be back before the third test and will also be a part of the preparations for the same. The 3rd Test begins on the 1st of March, giving the Australian cricket team a 9-day break. Hence the reason, Cummins and his trips back and forth to Sydney are possible. He will spend a few days in Sydney and will be right back.

Andrew McDonald on the Absence of Pat Cummins after the 2nd  Test:

When enquired about the absence of Pat Cummins and whether the absence of him makes an immense impact, here is what the Australian coach Andrew McDonald had to say, “We’ve got some decisions to make around squads and injuries. He’ll still be engaged in those conversations whilst dealing with what’s happening back home, but we’ve got some strong leaders in the squad who will be able to pick up the slack on the ground.”

If required, Steve Smith, the vice-captain, can also step in as the skipper. This has been the case on two previous occasions. Once Steve Smith had to be the skipper for a game in the Ashes 2022 at the Adelaide Oval. And the second occasion was the day-night test match against the West Indies. On the first occasion, Cummins had missed out as he was in close contact with someone detected with the coronavirus. And on the second occasion, it was due to a quad injury. But the Australians have their fingers crossed that Cummins must reach in time for the India VS Australia 3rd Test.

The pace bowling covers for Pat Cummins include Scott Boland and Lance Morris. Cameron Green is also expected to make a comeback in the India VS Australia 3rd Test. The same is the case with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood who had missed out on the first two India VS Australia test matches dues to injuries.
