IND vs SL: India are all set to travel to Sri Lanka for a white-ball tour. These two teams will play three T20Is and three ODIs on this tour. This tour is very important in many ways. This is the first assignment for Gautam Gambhir as India’s new head coach. The tour will get underway on July 27, with three T20Is being played in Pallekel.
The ODI leg will start on August 2, and all three matches will take place in Colombo. Notably, India will also see their new T20I captain on this tour. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja announced their T20I retirements after winning the ICC t20 World Cup 2024 the USA and West Indies. Hence, India will announce the new T20I captain. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was expected to announce the squad on Monday (July 16), but it has been delayed.
IND vs SL: Why BCCI is delaying announcing the squad for the Sri Lanka tour
Since Gambhir has taken over the role of head coach, there have been many things underway in Indian cricket. Earlier, there was news that KL Rahul would lead India in the IND vs SL ODI series because Rohit and other seniors had asked for a break.
But Gambhir wants all the seniors to be available for the ODIs. And now some reports confirm that Rohit has made himself available for the ODI series. Then, the next big thing was the appointment of the T20I captain. Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are the two names for this post.
There is a race between these two superstars to become the next T20I captain. Meanwhile, as per the media report by Dainik Jagran, the selection committee has not yet decided on the T20I captaincy, which is why the squad announcement for the IND vs SL tour has been delayed once again.
The Indian board is looking to appoint a long-term captain, and everyone from the management and selection committees needs to be on the same page. Though we might see the announcement very soon but some reports suggest that Suryakumar is the favourite to become the captain, and new head coach Gambhir is also backing him to lead the team in a shorter format and it won’t be a surprise if Suryakumar becomes new captain.
