India made a great start while chasing Afghanistan’s target. This target was small in front of the spirited batting of Rohit Sharma, and Rohit Sharma led the team towards victory by scoring 131 runs in 84 balls with the help of 16 fours and 5 sixes.
In keeping the scoreboard running continuously, young left-handed batsman Ishan Kishan played a good role in helping the captain hit the target and kept rotating the strike with good understanding.
Kishan opened his bat and started hitting shots when Rashid Khan caught him and was out after scoring 47 runs in 47 balls.
Rohit Sharma fell to Rashid Khan who also took Afghanistan’s second wicket, however, India easily achieved their target of victory in the 35th over at the loss of 2 wickets and won against Afghanistan by 6 wickets. Virat Kohli (55*) and Shreyas Iyer (25*) ensured a strong win increasing the net run rate.
Men Of The Match:
IND vs AFG: Hero of the Match
Standing records never stood before Rohit Sharma at the Cricket World Cup on October 11 as he led his team to a comfortable win over Afghanistan in Delhi.
Sharma scored 131 runs in just 84 balls and his team overcame Afghanistan’s total of 272 runs and eventually won with 90 balls to spare.
In his trademark blend of aggression and balance at the crease, the captain hit 16 fours and five sixes, completely dictating the conditions at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
By completing his century in just 63 balls, Sharma set the record for India’s fastest century in the Cricket World Cup and broke the 40-year-old record set by the great Kapil Dev 40 years ago.
Dev brought up his century in 72 balls against Zimbabwe at the Neville Ground in Tunbridge Wells, England – the only ODI ever played at the venue. Dev eventually scored 175* in 138 balls with the help of 22 fours.
Rohit has now overtaken compatriot Sachin Tendulkar with seven Cricket World Cup centuries. Incredibly, Sharma has achieved this record in just 19 innings and in just three World Cup campaigns compared to Tendulkar’s 44.
It will be difficult to reach Tendulkar’s Cricket World Cup total of 2278 runs at an average of 56.95, although Sharma’s average of 65.23 is the highest among players to reach four figures in the tournament.
Sharma, along with his fellow opening batsman David Warner, became the joint fastest batsman to score 1000 Cricket World Cup runs, doing so in just 19 innings. Warner reached this milestone when India and Australia met in Chennai at the start of the tournament.
