ICC World Cup 2023: That’s great news for Australian cricket fans! Australia’s five-time champions have now officially announced their 15-player squad for this year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

This exciting development sets the stage for an eagerly anticipated tournament as they aim to add another title to their impressive cricketing legacy.

Cricket enthusiasts worldwide will be eagerly watching as Australia’s talented squad competes on the world stage.

Australia initially announced an 18-player preliminary squad for the upcoming 50-over showcase event last month.

However, as the start of this year’s tournament in India is now less than a month away, they have now finalized their squad with 15 players.

Unfortunately, three players didn’t make the final cut:

All-rounder Aaron Hardie, pacer Nathan Ellis, and young spinner Tanveer Sangha. Instead, the selectors have chosen to go with a squad that leans towards experience, making up the majority of their final 15.

It’s worth noting that Test star Marnus Labuschagne has also missed out on the opportunity to be part of the World Cup team.

In the upcoming tournament, fast bowler Pat Cummins will once again take on the role of leading the side.

He will have the experienced quicks Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc to support him with the new ball.

The final spot in the squad as a backup pacer has been given to Sean Abbott, chosen over Nathan Ellis.

Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa have been selected as the spinning options for the team.

As for the batting lineup, there don’t appear to be many surprises. Batsmen such as David Warner, Steve Smith, and Travis Head are likely to feature in the top order.

Additionally, all-rounders like Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Cameron Green will provide valuable depth to what is already a high-quality batting lineup.

In the current squad, Australia has two wicketkeepers, namely Alex Carey and Josh Inglis.

Among them, Carey is the first-choice wicketkeeper, especially given his commendable performance in the last World Cup held in England and Wales in 2019.

Currently, the Australian cricket team is in South Africa, where they are gearing up for a five-game ODI series against the Proteas. Following this series, they will head to the subcontinent for a three-match ODI series against India later this month.

Before the World Cup begins, they will have additional practice opportunities through official warm-up fixtures against the Netherlands and Pakistan.

Their first match at this year’s event will be against the hosts, India, scheduled to take place in Chennai on October 8th.

While a few of Australia’s star players are nursing minor injuries, George Bailey, the selection chair, is confident that all 15 players in the squad will have the opportunity to participate in the India series later this month and will be declared fit before the final squad submission deadline to the ICC on September 28th.

George Bailey stated, “Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Glenn Maxwell are making good progress in their return-to-play programs. They are all well-positioned to rejoin the team in the coming weeks and potentially be selected for the upcoming series against India.”

He added, “There are still eight one-day matches to be played in South Africa and India before the final squad needs to be finalized. Additionally, there are two World Cup practice games, providing ample opportunities to continue building for the tournament.”
