Highest Successful Run Chases

The England Cricket Team was on a role on Tuesday as they chased 378 runs to set a record for themselves. This happens to be the highest run chases in the history of English Cricket. Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root led the way to this victory. But this has pushed test cricket into a new era. So, over the years, we have seen many successful run-chases. In recent times we can see Rishabh Pant leading the way for India at the Gabba or Kyle Mayers in Chattogram. So, what are the top 5 highest run-chases in cricket history? Here is a look:

This test match saw many ugly confrontations. It was a battle of sleds from both teams. This is the iconic test where Glenn McGrath and Ramnaresh Sarwan had their sledding on, against each other. So, the first innings was completed negated by both the teams scoring 240 odd runs. The second innings, saw Hayden and Langer bashing the West Indian bowlers. In the 4th Innings, the Windies were left at 78-3 but Brian Lara led the way with a valiant 60. Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul then took the onus, they got crucial hundreds. This happens to be the record-highest run chase in test cricket history.

2) 414-4 by South Africa Against Australia in 2008 is one of the highest run chases:

(Venue: WACA, Perth)

This was the first test of the 2008 series between Australia and South Africa. The South Africans were a dominant touring team. It was a team that was seeing the rise of many superstars. Dale Steyn, Hashim Amla, ABD, JP Duminy, Graeme Smith, and many more. The first innings of the Australians ended at 375. SA was bowled out for 281. The third innings saw the Aussies get 319. The South Africans got to the total with the hundreds from Graeme Smith and ABD.

(Venue: Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad)

This is the most iconic away test that the Indians have played. It was a time when the West Indies were a dominant force. They had the big strong and unrealistically super quick bowlers. These bowlers could scare the batters by mere presence. The West Indies declared in the 3rd innings when they had 4 wickets in hand. This became their worst mistake. Sunil Gavaskar, Gundappa Vishwanath, and Mohinder Amarnath made them pay. Gavaskar and Vishwanath got hundreds.

4) 404-3 by Australia against England in 1948 is one of the highest run chases:

(Venue: Leeds, England)

The Ashes are always fun to watch. This Leeds game was too good. It will go down as one of the greatest matches in Ashes history. Don Bradman scored 173 runs and Arthur Morris hit 182 in the last innings. This victory took the Australians 3-0 up in the series.

This test match was coinciding with the historic Gabba test match. Kyle Mayers was on debut. Nkrumah Bonner too. Both of them were the heroes of the victory for the Windies. The last innings of the game saw Kyle Mayers coming into his own. The Windies were 75-3. Nkrumah Bonner and Kyle Mayers stitched a 216 run-partnership. Kyle Mayers scored a double hundred.
