The Indian Premier League (IPL) has now become the biggest T20 league in the world. It has overtaken other cricket tournaments and has marked itself as one of the biggest sports events worldwide.
The success of the IPL is not hidden from anyone, and a lot of credit goes to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The BCCI understood the demand of the fans and introduced the IPL. Meanwhile, the recently introduced Women’s Premier League was also welcomed pretty well by the fans across the world.
And it looks like the BCCI is planning to introduce yet another T20 league just like the IPL. But this will feature the retired former cricketers, and the BCCI will give fans a chance to see their childhood stars once again.
BCCI to introduce IPL-style league for Retired Cricketers
There are a number of cricket leagues featuring retired cricketers that are played every year, and fans are loving such tournaments. But all these leagues are mainly operated by private bodies, and there is no major stake in any cricket boards in them.
The recent success of the World Championship Leagues in England has made the BCCI think of a new-kind league. And we might see former players like Sachin Tendulkar, AB de Villiers, Brain Lara, Ricky Ponting, and others playing against each other once again.
As reported by Dainik Jagran, a number of former Indian players approached BCCI secretary Jay Shah with the idea of an IPL-style league for retired cricketers. The report also confirms that the Indian board is in favour of such a league and has responded positively.
If it happens that it will also be a franchise league where teams will bid for the players at the auction. However, the report also confirms that the league is still in the starting stage and the discussion is going on. A source confirmed Dainik Jagran that this year it is not possible and may be next year, such a league can come into play.
The source said, “We have received a proposal from former cricketers in this regard, which is currently under consideration. However, it is still at the proposal stage. It is not possible this year. However, it could be considered for next year.”
