Asia Cup 2023: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup 2023. The squad was unveiled by Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar in New Delhi on a Monday afternoon. The decision was made following a selection meeting that saw the presence of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid.
The team composition reflects a blend of experienced and youthful talent. Renowned players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are joined by promising youngsters like Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma.
Ajit Agarkar highlighted Tilak Varma’s potential during the press conference, mentioning, “We saw some real promise in the West Indies. It will give him some exposure. We can pick 17 here in the World Cup; it would be 15.”
Regarding the fitness of players, Agarkar stated, “Shreyas has been declared match fit. KL has picked up a small niggle, that’s why Sanju is with us.”

Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri spoke about Tilak Verma:
Tilak Varma showcased strong performances in his debut series against West Indies, displaying both technical prowess and the temperament required for the international stage. Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri and selector Sandeep Patil concurred that they would have the 20-year-old in their team for both the Asia Cup and the World Cup.
The announcement also outlined that Tilak Varma's selection marked his maiden ODI call-up, while Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have returned to the squad.

Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been left out, while Kuldeep Yadav secured his place. Ajit Agarkar clarified that although this is not the official preliminary squad for the World Cup, the World Cup team is likely to be selected from these players.
This effectively designates the Asia Cup squad as a de facto preliminary squad for the World Cup. As India gears up for the Asia Cup, which will be contested in the 50-over format this year, their performance in this continental tournament will significantly impact their preparations for the upcoming ODI World Cup hosted in their own country.
Fitness Status of Players.
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been selected in the 17-member squad, if sports media is to be believed, their fitness status remains uncertain. as both are recovering from thigh and back injuries respectively. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah’s unexpected recovery during the T20I series against Ireland suggests that he will play a key role in the Asia Cup squad.
