Asia Cup 2023: Tamim Iqbal Steps Down as Bangladesh’s ODI Captain After getting ruled out of Asia Cup 2023: Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh ODI captain, has stepped down from the role after being ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 due to the back injury.
The 34-year-old batsman, Tamim Iqbal has led Bangladesh in 15 ODIs, made the announcement to step down as Captain in ODI Cricket for Bangladesh on Thursday after meeting with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan.
“I have taken an injection, but it is like a hit or miss,” Tamim said. “I believe injury is an issue. I have always thought about the team first. Stepping down would be the best possible thing.”
Tamim’s absence will also be a major setback for his own career. The left-hander is Bangladesh’s leading ODI run-scorer, with 8,313 runs at an average of 36.6. He is also their most successful ODI captain, with 8 wins from 15 matches.
Tamim’s decision to step down as captain will likely lead to a leadership change for Bangladesh ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Litton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah are all potential candidates to replace Tamim Iqbal as a captain.
The Asia Cup 2023 will be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka from August 30 to September 11. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are in Group A of the tournament.
Tamim Iqbal wants to continue as a Player for Bangladesh:
Tamim’s decision to step down as captain is a significant one for Bangladesh cricket. He has been a key figure in the team’s recent success, and his absence will be felt. However, it is the right decision for Tamim, who needs to focus on his recovery from injury.
However, Bangladesh cricket is in a strong position overall. The team has many talented players, and they have shown that they can compete with the best teams in the world.
The BCB will now need to appoint a new captain for the Asia Cup 2023 and beyond. Litton Das is expected to be the new captain of Bangladesh in ODI cricket. The BCB will decide soon, as the Asia Cup 2023 is just a few weeks away.
