Neeraj Chopra, the gold medalist from Tokyo Olympics 2020, and one of India’s brightest medal prospects at the CWG has been ruled out from the Commonwealth Games. Chopra recently won the second Indian after Anju Bobby George to win a medal at the World Athletic Championships. Neeraj won the silver medal in the Men’s Javelin Throw event. However, he was complaining of a groin injury and groin stiffness. Here is an in-depth look at the same: 

Neeraj Chopra Ruled Out of Commonwealth Games 2022: 

The athletics team from India has got a significant blow with Neeraj Chopra ruled out. He was a top prospect for a medal in the track and field events where India generally fails to open its account even at the Commonwealth Games. With him getting ruled out, the spotlight will be on the other athletic team members.  

The news was confirmed by Rajeev Mehta, the secretary of the IOA. He said that earlier in the day, he received a call from Neeraj, from Eugene. He complained of groin pain and stiffness. Following a series of MRI scans and a series of consultations with top doctors, Neeraj was advised to take complete rest for an entire month at least. This rules all his chances of taking an active part in the Commonwealth Games 2022 to be held in Birmingham.

Neeraj was also a top gold medal prospect because he had previously done the same at the CWG in 2018. Since that event, his career took off! He also became the gold medalist in Men’s Javelin Throw at the Tokyo 2020. He happens to be the first and the only Indian to win a medal in the track and field games. He is India’s second individual gold medalist. He was also India’s flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
