T20 World Cup 2024: USA vs India Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma depart early, India needs to chase a 111-run target; & Match Details: India are chasing 111 runs to win against USA in New York but suffered a big blow early on when Virat Kohli got out on a golden duck off the second ball of the innings, giving the US team hope of pulling off another big upset.
And skipper Rohit Sharma also departed cheaply, making the second innings a thriller. The USA has previously shocked Pakistan in this competition, and if they are to pull off another incredible victory over the side that is ranked first in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Rankings, they will need to bowl very well.
USA scores 110/8 in the first innings
India won the toss against USA in New York and decided to bowl first, picking the same XI that defeated Pakistan last time out. And Arshdeep Singh provided the early breakthrough by taking two powerplay wickets, dismissing Shayan Jahangir (0) and Andries Goss (2).
India bowled only three overs of spin in the innings, all by Axar Patel, who was relatively expensive with 1/25 from three overs. Arshdeep and Hardik Pandya were the main wicket-takers for India, with Hardik taking 2/14 from his four overs and Arshdeep taking remarkable figures of 4/9 from his four overs.
Their efforts helped restrict USA to 110/8, leaving India with a target of 111 runs to reach the Super 8 stage. The fielding effort for India was also excellent, with Mohammed Siraj making a brilliant effort to dismiss Nitish Kumar, and Rishabh Pant making a superb effort to dismiss Corey Anderson.

USA were without captain Monank Patel due to injury, meaning Aaron Jones took on the captaincy role, and it was Jones (11) who helped USA lay a platform for the host nation in a slow and steady partnership with Steven Taylor.
Faced with India’s fast-paced approach, USA tried to use pace to clear the ropes at the Nassau County venue, and hit six sixes in the innings to maintain some kind of momentum on a sticky New York wicket.
Taylor (24 off 30 balls) and Nitish Kumar (27 off 23 balls) did much of the damage, followed by Corey Anderson (15), Harmeet Singh (10) and Shadley van Schalkwyk (11) to take USA to triple figures and post something resembling a competitive score of 110/8. It couldn’t have been bigger for the USA national team: a crucial Group A encounter against the world’s top-ranked T20 nation, played in front of a packed house in New York.
India’s bowling attack played a key role in beating Pakistan in a thrilling match in New York on Sunday, putting Rohit Sharma’s side in a strong position in Group A, making it two wins from two after a win over Ireland in their opener. The USA beat Canada in the tournament opener and made a splash in the World Cup with their stunning win against Pakistan last week – a match that stunned the entire sporting world. Qualification for the Super 8 stage is still not certain, but another win will guarantee progress and help avoid relegation in other matches.
The USA’s last group match is against Ireland in Lauderhill on Friday. Before that, a win against India is expected today. Both these teams need one more point to secure a place in the Super 8.
