World Cup 2023: Australia innings
Australia captain Pat Cummins won the crucial toss in Chennai and decided to bat first. Contrary to him, Rohit Sharma said that the conditions were good for the bowlers and the wicket will turn as the game progresses.
Australian batsmen, the legendary opening pair of David Warner and Mitch Marsh came to bat, but at the very beginning of Australia’s innings, when Mitchell Marsh’s bat hit the ball of Jasprit Bumrah and went towards slip, Virat Kohli took advantage of the opportunity. And India got its first success.
A 69-run partnership between Warner and Steve Smith thereafter was the highlight of Australia’s batting innings, although India continued to dominate proceedings with the help of their spinners.
The tweakers shared six wickets between them. Ravindra Jadeja, who took 3 wickets for 28 runs, was India’s best bowler. He got good support from Kuldeep Yadav (2/42), Ravichandran Ashwin (1/34) and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah (2/35).
Smith top scored for Australia with 46 runs, while David Warner (41) and Mitchell Starc (28) also scored some runs. Chasing the target of 200, India faltered early on, losing three wickets in 12 balls.
After this Virat Kohli and KL Rahul came together to stabilize the innings. The duo added 165 runs for the fourth wicket to help India chase the target.
Kohli – who was given a lease of life on 12 when he was dropped by Mitchell Marsh – fell for 85 but Rahul held on till the end and remained unbeaten on 97, giving India a stunning win in their Cricket World Cup opener.
Australia captain Pat Cummins won the crucial toss in Chennai and decided to bat first. Contrary to him, Rohit Sharma said that the conditions were good for the bowlers and the wicket will turn as the game progresses.
With a four against Hardik Pandya in the seventh over, David Warner became the fourth Australia batsman to reach the 1000-run mark in the Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Australia picked up some momentum in that over and hit three fours to increase the scoring rate. Australia 43/1 at the end of the first powerplay. The Warner-Smith pair continued to score runs at a good pace.
India finally got the breakthrough in the 17th over when Warner (41) tried to punch Kuldeep down the ground and gave him a chance to make a comeback.
India’s spinners were successful in reducing the scoring rate with their disciplined bowling. Soon after the score of 25 overs, Jadeja bowled beautifully, dismissing Steve Smith for 46. The ball turned so much that it crossed the outer edge of Steve Smith and then hit his off stump.
In the 30th over, Jadeja took India ahead by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne (27) and Alex Carey (0). Australia suffered further setbacks in the 36th and 37th overs, when Glenn Maxwell (15) and Cameron Green (8) became the victims of Kuldeep and Ashwin respectively. An important contribution from Mitchell Stack (28) in the lower order took Australia to 199.

India’s innings had the worst start. They lost three batsmen for 0 at the score of 2. Ishan Kishan (0) chased a run away from his body against Mitchell Starc and was caught in the slip cordon. In the very next over, Josh Hazlewood got Rohit Sharma out LBW on zero.
Another wicket fell on the last ball of the second over, when Shreyas Iyer was caught driving away from his body. After this, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul together handled the innings. Both took time to settle their sights and then increased the scoring rate after the first powerplay.
Kohli escaped trouble in the eighth over when Mitchell Marsh dropped his catch off Hazlewood’s bowling. There was a partnership of 50 runs between the two in the 16th over. KL Rahul’s hat-trick of boundaries in the 18th over helped India’s scoring rate.
After 20 overs, Kohli and Rahul continued to play strongly and added runs at the rate of almost four an over. Kohli completed his half-century in the 26th over, while this figure was achieved in the 28th over.
While proceedings remained quiet in overs 21-30, Pat Cummins’ erratic fifth over helped India score 11 runs. After this India’s run flow improved. Scoring better with run a ball, India had brought the required rate close to three by the 35th over. Kohli was eventually out in the 38th over after scoring 85 runs in 116 balls.
This was the highest partnership for any Indian pair against Australia in a Cricket World Cup competition. This was also the highest partnership for the fourth wicket between two Indian batsmen in a Cricket World Cup competition. The arrival of Hardik Pandya boosted India’s initiative and the Men in Blue crossed the line in the 42nd over.
