Top 10 run-getters: David Warner scored a brilliant century on the first day of the opening Test against Pakistan in Perth. David Warner silenced all doubters regarding his Test cricket form on the first day of the first Test against Pakistan, scoring an outstanding 164 runs in 211 balls. It was a fantastic start to his farewell tour.

During his incredible innings, Warner moved into the top five highest run-scorers for Australia in Test cricket, surpassing Matthew Hayden and Michael Clarke.

In the all-time list, his big century helped him overtake fellow batsmen Sir Viv Richards and Virender Sehwag. Warner is now ranked fifth among Australia’s highest Test run-scorers with 8651 runs, behind only Steve Smith, Steve Waugh, Allan Border and Ricky Ponting.

Coming out with intent, Warner supported Pat Cummins’ choice to bat first on the Perth surface. He completed his half-century off just 41 balls and shared a pacey century partnership with Usman Khawaja.

While his teammates were guilty of not taking advantage of good starts – Smith was the next highest scorer on the day with only 41 runs – Warner scored his 26th Test century, followed by his trademark leap and celebration.

After reaching his century, 37-year-old David Warner got a few leases of life – first, Khurram Shahzad missed a chance to take a catch, and then Sarfaraz Ahmed failed to make a stumping. Pakistan had to bear the brunt of this by Warner scoring a pile of runs and scoring 150 runs.

The visitors eventually got the better of Warner by adopting a short-ball strategy, with the Australian opener holed out in the deep just a few overs before the end of the day’s play.

After this, Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey put Australia in a strong position by scoring 346 runs and five wickets without giving any further blow in the remaining overs.
