Before the 100th test, Ponting praised Ravichandran Ashwin and said that he is a master of spin: Australia great Ricky Ponting talked about his time spent with Ravichandran Ashwin at Delhi Capitals during the IPL season in the most recent episode of ICC Review.
Ravichandran Ashwin is about to become the fourteenth cricketer from India to surpass the 100-test match mark, capping an incredible and famous career that many players aspire to.
Records are being made and broken in every format in the game of cricket, with Ashwin having his hands full – in the ongoing series against England, he not only crossed the 500-wicket mark.
He even left Anil Kumble behind in terms of taking the most Test wickets and most five wickets in India. Currently, he is behind only ICC Hall of Famers Muttiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne and Richard Hadlee in terms of five-wicket hauls in Tests.
The former Australian captain and current captain, Ponting, is the head coach of the Delhi Capitals team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Both Ricky Ponting and R Ashwin have worked together in the Capitals.
“He’s a master of spin in any conditions,” Ponting said. “He’s been an incredible cricketer, no doubt about it.
“I had a chance to coach him for a couple of years at Delhi, and loved working with him. He’s got a lot of theories and philosophies on the game, which I really like. He’s always done things a little bit differently and done things his own way. But he just continued to evolve as a bowler.
“That’s the thing that I loved about him when I was coaching him, he’d stand at the end of his mark and he’d be working on something different, a little tweak to his action or a change of grip or a different delivery. He’s never been one that was going to die wondering about trying to find ways to get better.”
