Suryakumar Yadav has started his captaincy stint with a win. Team India have continued their dominance in the shorter format and have thrashed Sri Lanka in the first game of the three-match series.
The visitors have registered a win by the margin of 43 runs, which has given them a 1-0 lead in the series. It was a great start for Suryakumar Yadav as permanent T20I captain.
It was a comprehensive performance from India, who outplayed Sri Lanka in both departments. It was a good toss to lose for the Men in Blue, and they started with a big. Both Indian openers gave India a flying start and added a 74-run stand in just 6 overs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 40 runs off 21 balls, while Shubman Gill slammed a 16-ball 34. Both openers smashed 11 fours and three sixes in the first six overs.
Suryakumar Yadav registered historic feat in the first T20I vs Sri Lanka
After a good start, India lost both openers on consecutive deliveries. That brought the captain, Suryakumar Yadav, to the crease, and he kept the momentum going and smashed a 22-ball fifty. It was his 20th fifty. He played some exceptional shots, and the team was flying when he was at the crease.
He got out after scoring 58 runs off 26 balls with 8 fours and two sixes. He helped the team reach a big total of 213/7 in the first inning. Eventually, it proved to be a winning total for India. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 170 runs in 19.2 overs and lost the game by 43 runs.
As a result, Suryakumar Yadav was named Man of the Match for his superb fifty. It was the 16th MOTM award for the Indian captain in T20 internationals. With this, Suryakumar has equalled Virat Kohli’s all-time record for most MOTM awards in T20Is.
Virat has 16 MOTM awards in his T20I career in 125 matches. But Suryakumar Yadav took only 69 matches to win the 16th MOTM award. Virat has retired from T20Is. Interestingly, Surya took 56 fewer matches than Virat. He has scored 2398 runs in T20Is at an average of 43.6 and a strike rate of 168.75.
