T20 World Cup 2024: Bumrah recalls key moments from India’s win over Pakistan: Jasprit Bumrah emerged as the hero in a thrilling encounter played at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, helping India complete a stunning comeback win over Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Bumrah’s brilliant bowling performance played a key role in India’s six-run win.
Bumrah’s match-winning performance
Bumrah took 3 for 14 in his four overs, including 15 dot balls. Chasing a modest target of 120, Pakistan looked set for a win, especially thanks to a brilliant opening partnership between Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. The duo had taken Pakistan to 26 for no loss by the fifth over, laying the foundation for an easy chase.
However, the game took a dramatic turn after Bumrah was dismissed. He took the crucial wicket of Babar Azam, who was caught by Suryakumar Yadav for 13. His dismissal was a psychological blow for Pakistan, indicating that the chase was fought with challenges.
The situation changed
Despite Babar’s dismissal, Rizwan continued to hold the innings while his teammates Usman Khan and Fakhar Zaman fell cheaply. Rizwan’s restrained batting brought Pakistan closer to victory, needing only 40 runs from 36 balls and having seven wickets left.
Making the decisive move, Bumrah was brought back into the attack and he bowled immediately. His first ball uprooted Rizwan’s stumps, a moment that completely changed the momentum in India’s favour. Recalling this crucial moment, Bumrah said, “The first wicket was very important to build the base because after that you start building pressure. And that third over of mine was crucial; if it went in Pakistan’s favour, the game would have been over.” The final push
After Rizwan’s dismissal, Bumrah also took the wicket of Iftikhar Ahmed, further strengthening India’s grip on the match. Arshdeep Singh kept his composure in the final over, dismissing Imad Wasim and handling the pressure exerted by Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi to ensure victory.
The win put India on top of Group A, surpassing the USA on net run rate after the Americans’ surprise win over Pakistan in Dallas. Now winless Pakistan will have to fight hard to progress, needing crucial wins over Canada and Ireland, as well as favourable results in the other group matches.
Tribute to team effort
Bumrah credited the collective effort of the bowling unit for the win. “We are very proud of our bowling and we work very hard to develop more skills and help the team as much as possible,” he said. “We were very calm and clear on what we wanted. We were able to contribute and build pressure, which led to victory.”
The win over Pakistan not only showcased Bumrah’s brilliance but also highlighted the resilience and unity of the Indian team. The bowlers executed their plans without any let-up and ensured there was never any panic despite the high stakes.
While India celebrate this famous win, Bumrah’s exceptional performance will be remembered as a key factor in their successful World Cup campaign, reflecting his skills and the strategic acumen of the entire team.
