Sri Lanka WTC 2025 Preparation: Sri Lanka’s cricket team is gearing up for the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) with a clear plan.
After a tough 2023-25 cycle, where they missed the final, the team is focusing on improving its game.
Led by Captain Dhananjaya de Silva, Sri Lanka is working on scoring runs faster and bowling more maidens to gain an edge in the new WTC cycle.
Their recent series against Bangladesh shows they mean business.
Sri Lanka WTC 2025 Preparation: Why Scoring Rate Matters
A higher scoring rate puts pressure on opponents. In the first Test against Bangladesh in Galle, the team saw how Bangladesh’s batters, like Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim, scored steadily but slowly.
This allowed Sri Lanka to stay in control. De Silva wants his team to bat faster, like Australia did earlier in Galle, scoring at four runs per over.
A quicker scoring rate can set big totals or chase targets effectively, giving Sri Lanka a better chance to win matches.

Bowling More Maidens
Bowling maidens – overs with no runs – builds pressure on batters. In the second Test in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s spinners, led by Prabath Jayasuriya, showed that this works.
Jayasuriya’s five-wicket haul, supported by tight bowling from Dhananjaya de Silva and Tharindu Ratnayake, led to a big win.
By bowling more maidens, Sri Lanka can force mistakes from batters, leading to wickets.
This strategy is key on spin-friendly pitches like Galle and Colombo.
Learning from Past Mistakes
Captain admitted they made errors in the last WTC cycle, especially in bowling during the first innings.
In Galle, they gave away too many runs, letting Bangladesh score 495. De Silva emphasized better planning and execution.
The team’s bowlers worked hard in Colombo, restricting Bangladesh to 247 and 133, showing improvement.
This focus on discipline will be crucial for the WTC.
Building a Strong Future
With only 12 Tests scheduled in this WTC cycle, every match counts.
Team is also introducing new players like Sonal Dinusha to replace veterans like Angelo Mathews.
The team’s recent 1-0 series win over Bangladesh is a confidence booster.
By scoring faster and bowling tightly, team aims to climb the WTC rankings and make a strong case for the final.
