Rohit Sharma’s repetitive, disappointing performances have led him down as he finally decided to step down as the Indian skipper in the final test at SCG. Rohit’s weak patch of form has also stirred up rumours of his retirement.

The recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2024/25 ended 3-1 in favour of the hosts, who secured the BGT after an entire decade of India’s dominance in the series. This win helped Australia take a big leap forward as they advanced to the playoffs and almost secured a WTC final place.

Former Australian cricketer and commentator Simon Katich took a lighthearted jab at the Indian skipper, suggesting that he has a promising future in stand-up comedy.

He stated, “Well, if you look at the numbers, they are damning. We saw it in this test. It was very selfless of him to opt out of the test; I saw in that interview he was very well-spoken. There’s no doubt he has a future after he is done playing cricket in stand-up comedy because his humour was very good.”

“Only he knows whether he has the hunger and drive at 37 to go again. England is not going to be an easy series; England is on their way up. They have some good young quicks coming through. Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse are doing well. I dare say that will be a tough tour if he chooses to go on it and the Indian selectors pick him, first and foremost.”

The two Indian maestros of modern-day cricket, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, made a huge impact over the years in India’s dominance in the longest format of the game. Though they have been elusive in limited-overs cricket, they have underperformed in the longest format.

Rohit Sharma has scored a total of 2160 runs with an average of 36. He has scored 6 centuries and 8 fifties since 2020. Whereas Virat Kohli has only been able to score 2028 runs with an average of 30.72. He has 3 centuries and 9 fifties to his name. The struggle has been more eminent in overseas conditions in SENA countries.
